At DanceWise Dance Studio, we believe dancing is more than learning steps — it’s about expressing yourself, connecting with others, and finding joy in movement. Whether you’re new to ballroom or already love to dance, you’ve probably heard about the two major “Latin” styles: International Latin and American Rhythm.
Both are passionate, rhythmic, and full of energy — but they each bring something unique to the dance floor. Let’s explore the differences so you can discover which style fits your dancing personality!
🌎 Two Traditions, One Love of Dance
Both International Latin and American Rhythm belong to the Latin branch of ballroom dancing, emphasizing rhythm, hip movement, and expressive body action.
International Latin developed in Europe and is danced in competitions all around the world.
American Rhythm evolved from the social and competitive dance scene here in the United States.
They share common roots — but their technique, energy, and dance lists set them apart.
💃 The Dances
International Latin includes:
Cha Cha
Samba
Rumba
Paso Doble
Jive
American Rhythm includes:
Cha Cha
Rumba
East Coast Swing
Bolero
Mambo
You’ll notice a couple of shared names — Cha Cha and Rumba — but don’t be fooled! Even these familiar dances feel and look different between the two styles.
🕺 How They Move
International Latin
International Latin is known for its precision, power, and polish. Dancers use straight-leg technique to create crisp Cuban motion and maintain a compact, elegant frame.
Each dance tells its own story:
Cha Cha – playful and flirtatious
Rumba – romantic and expressive
Samba – lively and rhythmic, inspired by Brazilian carnival
Paso Doble – dramatic and powerful
Jive – fast, fun, and full of bounce
Because it’s a worldwide competitive style, International Latin has a consistent technical foundation recognized around the globe.
American Rhythm
American Rhythm feels earthier, more grounded, and expressive. The bent-knee technique creates a rolling, fluid hip action, and dancers often use open work, spins, and creative patterns.
Cha Cha – cheeky and lively
Rumba – smooth and romantic, emphasizing body rhythm
East Coast Swing – upbeat and jazzy
Bolero – graceful and flowing, like a Latin waltz
Mambo – fast, syncopated, and exciting
This style encourages individuality and personal flair — perfect for dancers who love to express themselves.
💫 Expression and Emotion
The main difference between the two styles comes down to expression:
International Latin focuses on structure, technique, and precision.
American Rhythm emphasizes freedom, storytelling, and personality.
At DanceWise, we teach both — so you can experience the contrast and choose the style that inspires you most.
❤️ Which Style Will You Love?
If you love clean, powerful lines and the challenge of international technique, International Latin might be your match.
If you prefer a smooth, expressive style with more creative freedom, American Rhythm will make you fall in love with dancing all over again.
Many of our students enjoy learning both — and find that each enhances the other!
