Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I don’t have a partner?
You don’t need to have a partner to dance, we have wonderful instructors who will dance with you! On social dance evenings and in group classes many people swap dance partners, and that’s not only fun, but a great way to improve your dance skills. However, if you do have a regular partner, that’s great!
  • What if I can’t dance?
This may be a bit of a boast, but we haven’t met anybody who we could not teach to dance! There are no limitations, we have worked with people with a wide range of physical abilities and experiences. If you don’t feel ready yet for group classes, in Private lessons you can learn at your own pace, and we adjust our teaching style to whatever works best for you.
  • Do I need dance shoes?
Ballroom dance shoes are not essential, but it’s a good idea to avoid sandals or crocs that could slip off while dancing. We have a DanceVision sprung wooden floor, so please avoid sharp stilettos or shoes with nails on the bottom! You will find a good pair of dance shoes make it all much easier, and we do have them for sale at the studio.
  • What should I wear for dancing?
We do not have a dress code at DanceWise - we realize our students have full lives and are happy for you to show up as you are. The most important thing is that clothes are comfortable and that you can move freely. We do have some fabulous events like our social dance evenings, tea dances, and themed holiday parties where dancers can come dressed to impress in as much costume and fanfare as they like!
  • How much does it cost?
The cost for group lessons and social dance events are listed on our calendar and is usually $15 per person. New students are eligible for the 2-lesson introductory special for $79 for a private lesson with Julianne or Paul. Regular private lessons can be purchased by the hour, or in package plans that offer discounted rates. In the end, however much you dance is up to you!
  • How can I pay for my lessons?
We happily accept cash, check, and credit cards. Credit card transactions incur a 4% fee.
  • Do you offer group classes for children?
Yes, we have a class on Saturday mornings at 10:00 am. Ages are typically 7 to 13. We learn the ballroom and Latin rhythm dances, plus some fun dances, and there are opportunities to perform in showcases.
  • What dances do you teach?
We teach the American smooth dances (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz) and the American Rhythm (Cha Cha, Rumba, Bolero, and Mambo). We also teach in the International style which includes the Quickstep, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive.
  • Do you teach wedding couples their first dance?
For us, this is always a great pleasure, to help a couple feel confident in their first dance together. We can use whatever music you choose or help you select the perfect song for your dream dance to create something unique for you. Check out the Weddings section of our website for a more detailed description.
  • Can I enter competitions and appear in showcases ?
Absolutely! We love to train you for competitions and showcases, each year we have a large on-stage showcase (that’s a great experience) and about 6 times a year we dance with our students in competitions both locally in Phoenix/Scottsdale/Mesa and throughout the United States.
