The Blackpool Dance Festival, held annually in the seaside town of Blackpool, England, is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious ballroom dancing events in the world. Its origins date back to 1920, when it was first organized in the iconic Winter Gardens. At the time, ballroom dancing was experiencing a surge in popularity across Britain, and the festival quickly became a focal point for both professional and amateur dancers eager to showcase their skill.
Throughout the 20th century, the festival grew in stature and international appeal. By the 1930s, it had already established itself as a global competition, attracting dancers from Europe and beyond. Despite interruptions during World War II, the event resumed in 1946 and entered a golden era, setting standards for technique, style, and judging that still influence competitive ballroom dancing today.

One of the defining features of the Blackpool Dance Festival is its commitment to tradition. The grand Empress Ballroom, with its ornate architecture and sprung dance floor, has remained the heart of the event for over a century. Competitors and spectators alike often speak of the unique atmosphere—both glamorous and intensely competitive—that sets Blackpool apart from other dance events.
Today, the festival continues to draw top dancers from around the world, maintaining its reputation as the pinnacle of ballroom dance competition. While styles and trends in dance have evolved, the Blackpool Dance Festival remains a symbol of excellence, heritage, and enduring passion for the art of dance.
Unlike Ballroom world championships, where each country can only send two couples to represent them, the Blackpool Dance Festival is open to everyone, the worlds best couples, and last year saw over 2,000 competitors from 50 countries.
As a young amateur and as a professional dancer, Paul had the privilege of dancing many times at the Blackpool festival, and doing quite well, an experience he will never forget.
