Why did you start dancing?
"During the winter months of my high school years, I worked each weekend at a ski lodge near my home in Ontario, Canada. On some of the most bitterly cold days with temperatures as low as minus forty degrees, avid skiers would show up to brave the weather on the slopes. This always intrigued me. I wondered what it was that could compel someone to leave a warm cozy bed in the early hours of a Saturday morning for the brutal experience of a Canadian winter at its worst.
It was not until I found myself in a ballroom that I fully understood. It is said that deep within the recesses of our brain there exists a tiny little ‘pilot light’. This pilot light is the potential for the release of one of our naturally occurring pleasure chemicals called dopamine. The action of this chemical can be readily seen at the moment you ask any grandmother about her grand-baby. Immediately her face illuminates, her eyes light up and a beautiful smile emerges. This ‘pilot light’ apparently ignites furiously when we are sharply focused on something we love or when we engage in something we uniquely enjoy.
This is the story of my relationship with ballroom dancing. There were early attempts over the years to find that ‘thing’ that I would be passionate about. Something that provided an avenue or an escape from personal stressors and the demands of my career. I took lessons: ski, scuba, piano, floral arranging, guitar. All were fleeting, quickly fading, until October 2004.
The film Shall We Dance had just been released to theaters. Why I was so taken by the slow motion image of Jennifer Lopez being led into a beautiful deep over-sway by her dance partner I cannot explain. She looked on the outside what I now experience on the inside when I am dancing. In those moments when I am not focused on my frame or footwork, I seem only to feel the music and effortless movements of my body. That little ‘pilot light’ ignites, and my thoughts are quiet and free. My soul is free. I am in my joy, and nothing exists outside of the moment."
What’s your favorite dance?
"A beautiful ethereal waltz! I think in part that having been somewhat of a ‘tomboy’ growing up, I am more in touch with my femininity with the beautiful and graceful moves of the waltz. But when the music is perfect (and it has to be perfect and fill the room), I feel completely and absolutely free.
Over time I have begun to appreciate the energy, playfulness and expressiveness of other dances, but it was a beautiful waltz that drew me to a studio on that October day years ago."
What’s your favorite memory at DanceWise?
"I loved the moment that our first group formation dance came together, and we all knew we had nailed it! It happened again in March and you could feel the collective pride and sense of accomplishment after it was over."
Do you have any advice for other dancers?
"Put it on the dance floor!
Ballroom dancing undeniably contributes to physical, emotional and cognitive well-being. Doug and I have met some of the nicest people in the ballroom that have now become like family, so dancing also brings great socialization opportunities. The discipline of learning new steps in private lessons and classes offers challenge, a chance to push through self-imposed boundaries. And the artistry of dance is a wonderful creative outlet.
But in the end, just leave it all on the dance floor. Be free, enjoy, have fun!"
