Why did you start dancing?
"Twenty-six years ago, I was a new widow with an empty nest who wanted to meet new people and start a new life. So I visited a local ballroom dance studio and signed up for group Salsa lessons. Little did I know then, that I would meet my husband Jack and marry him a year later in the same ballroom. Our 25year dancing story never stopped, except a few years during Covid, and included countless hours of group classes, private lessons, competitions and showcases in NH, ME and MA before moving to AZ in late 2019.
Long before that, my dance and music experience began as a very young child with the usual ballet and tap dancing lessons. I remember loving it but my mom didn’t think I was learning anything and that was the end of that. On the other hand, my sister and I watched our parents Square Dance at the local Odd Fellows club regularly. Then I learned to play the flute in the 4th grade and continued playing/singing in the band, orchestra and choir all the way through junior and senior high school. It wasn’t until I took up the oboe in high school and then later performed professionally in the Air Force for many years, that I experienced all genres of music, most of which are danceable. I even took up adult ballet before my children were born. Dancing and music never left me, as music is the language of the soul."
What’s your favorite dance?
"That’s always a very hard question to answer because I learned all the smooth, rhythm, and standard dances, two Latin and a few club dances, as well. However, I particularly love slow waltzes, fiery tangos, rumbas and boleros."
What’s your favorite memory at DanceWise?
"I must say, looking back, it seems like I’ve been dancing at DanceWise a whole lot longer than when Jack and I first walked in to check out the studio on Jan 11, 2025. The coolest memory was learning at our first social dance at DanceWise on Feb 1st, 2025, that growing up, Paul had competed with and knew one of our favorite, long-time previous guest dance instructors, who is also from …Wow, what a small world!"
Do you have any advice for other dancers?
"Remember that no one is born knowing how to dance or walk for that matter, but as our first longtime instructor told us, “If you can walk, you can dance. It just takes a little practice.” We all started as a beginner, and you can do it, too! Just have fun and keep at it. It’s the best clean and healthy fun you’ll ever have and maybe even find that perfect forever dance partner. Does it help having a musical background, absolutely, but your desire and passion to learn can lead to a lifetime of good health and fun."
